The Eyes of Tammy Faye

SOMETIMES IN LIFE, YOU HAVE TO TAKE YOUR LASHES.

Inspired by the 2000 documentary of the same title, this drama tells the story of televangelist couple Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker who became a sensation in the 1980s, until their collapsing marriage, rape accusations, gay rumors and fraud ended their careers. Focus lies on Tammy Faye, whose heavy makeup became her calling card. Jessica Chastain brings passion and depth to a character who became a laughingstock over the years; Andrew Garfield is fine, but never feels quite as convincing. Slick and entertaining in its portrayal of greedy preachers struggling with double standards, all of it laced with a sense of sadness.

2021-U.S. 126 min. Color. Directed by Michael Showalter. Makeup: Stephanie Ingram, Linda Dowds, Justin Raleigh. Cast: Jessica Chastain (Tammy Faye Bakker), Andrew Garfield (Jim Bakker), Cherry Jones (Rachel Grover), Vincent D’Onofrio, Mark Wystrach, Sam Jaeger.

Trivia: The story was previously told in a TV movie, Fall From Grace (1990).

Oscars: Best Actress (Chastain), Makeup and Hairstyling. BAFTA: Best Make Up & Hair.
