Some time after an apocalyptic event, Joel Dawson (Dylan O’Brien) leaves his colony and tries to make his way to the girl he loves, encountering one deadly creature after another. A monster movie for a younger audience that also offers a romance? Warm Bodies (2013) had more clever ideas. Still, don’t underestimate this adventure that features a likable performance by O’Brien as the kid who has to learn survival skills fast, a cute dog who becomes his ally, and excellent visual effects that turn regular bugs and snails into dangerous monsters. A well-paced adventure with a laidback sense of humor.
