Congo

WHERE YOU ARE THE ENDANGERED SPECIES.

Karen Ross (Laura Linney) joins a motley expedition to Africa where everybody has different objectives, including finding a fabled diamond mine. A hit in theaters but savaged by the critics, this adventure has the expected Michael Crichton trappings, with characters learning lessons about greed and technology as they fight for their lives in a jungle. A lot of talent behind the scenes, but too silly. The animatronic gorilla Amy, created by Stan Winston, is kind of impressive… but never convincing.

1995-U.S. 108 min. Color. Directed by Frank Marshall. Screenplay: John Patrick Shanley. Novel: Michael Crichton. Cast: Laura Linney (Karen Ross), Ernie Hudson (Monroe Kelly), Tim Curry (Herkermer Homolka), Grant Heslov, Dylan Walsh, Joe Don Baker… John Hawkes. Cameos: Joe Pantoliano, Delroy Lindo.
