The Canterville Ghost

A HIGH-SPIRITED ALL-FAMILY CLASSIC.

An American family comes to England to stay in an old castle; soon, the daughter (Neve Campbell) discovers that it is haunted by the ghost of its former owner (Patrick Stewart). Only ten years after a watchable TV movie version of the Oscar Wilde story, starring John Gielgud as the Canterville ghost, comes this uninspired redo. Campbell is adequate as the bored teenager, and Stewart certainly has the right booming voice for the spirit; for the Shakespearian actor, thereā€™s even a ā€Hamletā€ moment. Good enough for a young teen audience.

1996-U.S. Made for TV. 92 min. Color. Directed byĀ Syd Macartney. Short Story: Oscar Wilde. Cast: Patrick Stewart (Sir Simon de Canterville), Neve Campbell (Virginia ā€Ginnyā€ Otis), Daniel Betts (Francis), Cherie Lunghi, Edward Wiley, Raymond Pickard.
