The Flintstones

YABBA-DABBA-DO!

An elaborate, expensive and commercially speaking very successful live-action adaptation of the classic animated 1960-1966 TV series ‚Äď but it can‚Äôt escape a plastic and rubbery feeling as it‚Äôs tried perhaps a bit too hard to get close to the original. Kids might like it better (although the original should impress them more); it‚Äôs fun watching Elizabeth Taylor as Wilma‚Äôs mother and John Goodman is obviously perfect as Fred. But the story, putting Fred‚Äôs friendship with Barney to the test, is formulaic and we can tolerate only so many Stone Age jokes.¬†

1994-U.S. 92 min. Color. Directed by Brian Levant. Cast: John Goodman (Fred Flintstone), Elizabeth Perkins (Wilma Flintstone), Rick Moranis (Barney Rubble), Rosie O’Donnell, Kyle MacLachlan, Halle Berry… Elizabeth Taylor. Voices of Harvey Korman, Jay Leno.

Trivia: Co-executive produced by Steven Spielberg (or rather ‚ÄĚSpielrock‚ÄĚ) and the TV show‚Äôs creators, Joseph Barbera and William Hanna (who both have cameos in the film). Danny DeVito was allegedly considered as Barney. Followed by a prequel, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2000).

Razzies: Worst Supporting Actress (O’Donnell), Screenplay.
