Downsizing

WE ARE MEANT FOR SOMETHING BIGGER.

In the near future, scientists find a way to shrink people down to five inches; this ”downsizing” becomes an environmentally friendly, even luxurious, option for a married couple in Omaha (Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig). Alexander Payne worked on this idea for many years before it finally became a movie, but the results are a bit of a letdown. Ambitious, with plenty of food for thought regarding the nature of activism, but not quite as funny, charming or touching as intended. Still, a strong performance by Damon who goes through quite a journey, Christoph Waltz as his hard-partying neighbor, and Hong Chau as a woman who was downsized against her will.

2017-U.S. 135 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Alexander Payne. Screenplay: Alexander Payne, Jim Taylor. Cast: Matt Damon (Paul Safranek), Christoph Waltz (Dusan Mirkovic), Hong Chau (Ngoc Lan Tran), Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis, Maribeth Monroe… Udo Kier, Rolf Lassgård, James Van Der Beek, Neil Patrick Harris, Laura Dern, Mary Kay Place.
