The Jane Austen Book Club

SIX MONTHS. SIX NOVELS. SIX MEMBERS.Ā

Screenwriter Robin Swicord has adapted many novels in the past and this project seemed fitting for her feature film directing debut, a story depicting six people who form a book club devoted to Jane Austen’s novels. We follow them over the course of six months and fans of the author will have fun noting how the characters reflect some of Austen’s famous literary figures. But even if you don’t know your Austen there’s pleasure to derive from this uncomplicated but enjoyable film that has romance, laughs and an attractive cast. The characters, who are a motley bunch, and their problems are engaging enough.

2007-U.S. 106 min. Color. Written and directed byĀ Robin Swicord. Novel: Karen Joy Fowler. Cast: Maria Bello (Jocelyn), Emily Blunt (Prudie), Kathy Baker (Bernadette), Amy Brenneman, Maggie Grace, Jimmy Smits… Hugh Dancy, Lynn Redgrave, Nancy Travis.
