The First Monday in May

Following The September Issue (2009), hereā€™s another documentary that peeks behind the curtains of Vogue editor Anna Wintourā€™s professional life as she prepares for the annual Met Gala, an event that raises millions of dollars for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This time, the elaborate show is also tied to the opening of a new exhibit, ā€China: Through the Looking Glassā€ (2015). The real protagonist of the film though is the likable museum curator Andrew Bolton whoā€™s working hard to get the exhibit ready in time. That includes a visit to Beijing, but the filmā€™s attempt to ask serious questions about fashion and art is half-hearted and the narrative has little drama.

2016-U.S. 90 min. Color. Directed byĀ Andrew Rossi.

Trivia: The interviewees include Jean Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld, Baz Luhrmann and Wong Kar-wai.
