Hector and the Search for Happiness

EVERYONE WANTS TO FIND IT.

hectorsearchforhappinessHector (Simon Pegg), who’s bored with his perfect little dull life, tells his girlfriend (Rosamund Pike) that he needs to go away on a journey east to find out what exactly makes people happy. Much like Eat Pray Love (2010), this movie offers banal answers to difficult questions and has another well-off Westerner trudging around Asia hoping to be inspired. But unlike the Julia Roberts film, this one is done with a charming, light touch and has irresistible performances by Pegg and Pike, even though the latter would have benefited from a meatier role. Not much depth, but emotional at times… with a healthy dose of slapstick.

2014-Germany-Britain-Canada. 120 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Peter Chelsom. Novel: François Lelord. Cast: Simon Pegg (Hector), Rosamund Pike (Clara), Toni Collette (Agnes), Barry Atsma, Stellan Skarsgård, Christopher Plummer… Jean Reno.
