SOMETHING UNSPEAKABLE IS HAPPENING TO JANE HARPER.
Oxford professor Joseph Coupland (Jared Harris) and his group of assistants take a controversial experiment to an isolated house in the countryside; they intend to help a young woman (Olivia Cooke) get rid of her “negative energy”. A horror movie that’s loosely based on a 1970s experiment where parapsychologists tried to “create” ghosts. Sounds like a promising idea, but the execution is much too dull to generate more than cheap shocks; loud sound effects is what makes you jump, not fear. Harris gives it his best in a Donald Pleasence-type role.
2014-U.S.-Britain. 98 min. Color. Directed by John Pogue. Cast: Jared Harris (Joseph Coupland), Sam Claflin (Brian McNeil), Erin Richards (Krissi Dalton), Rory Fleck-Byrne, Olivia Cooke, Laurie Calvert.
