Vacancy

HOW CAN YOU ESCAPE… IF THEY CAN SEE EVERYTHING?

When their car breaks down, Amy and David Fox (Kate Beckinsale, Luke Wilson) rent a room at a shady motel that harbors greater surprises than the odd cockroach. Nimród Antal must be a fan of Hitchcock; the set-up is reminiscent of Psycho (1960) and those gorgeous titles look like something Saul Bass would do. There are times when this tautly directed thriller is so tense it almost makes you forget that there are few surprises here and that the final half-hour is a routine getaway attempt. Still, very entertaining and creepy, with an amusing Norman Bates-like performance by Frank Whaley.

2007-U.S. 80 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Nimród Antal. Cast: Kate Beckinsale (Amy Fox), Luke Wilson (David Fox), Frank Whaley (Mason), Ethan Embry, Scott G. Anderson, Mark Casella.

Trivia: Sarah Jessica Parker was reportedly considered for the lead. Followed by a direct-to-DVD prequel, Vacancy 2: The First Cut (2008).
