MAY THE BEST HITMAN WIN.
A group of competing hit men try to kill a Las Vegas entertainer (Jeremy Piven) with mob connections before he gets to turn state’s evidence. An entertaining, violent Tarantino knock-off with no original touches. Here’s three details viewers should appreciate, though – Matthew Fox’s well-disguised, amusing cameo as a security guard; Taraji P. Henson’s not too subtle infatuation with her sexy hit man colleague (Alicia Keys); and Piven’s performance that turns his character into a very seedy version of Ari Gold from Entourage.
2007-U.S. 109 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Joe Carnahan. Cast: Jeremy Piven (Buddy Israel), Ryan Reynolds (Richard Messner), Alicia Keys (Georgia Sykes), Peter Berg, Jason Bateman, Ben Affleck… Taraji P. Henson, Andy Garcia, Chris Pine, Ray Liotta, Wayne Newton. Cameo: Matthew Fox.
Trivia: Followed by a direct-to-DVD sequel, Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassin’s Ball (2010).
