The 51st State

NICE WHEELS. DIRTY DEALS. AND ONE MEAN MOTHER IN A KILT.

American master chemist Elmo McElroy (Samuel L. Jackson) arrives in Liverpool to sell his formula for the strongest drug ever to a local drug baron. A film featuring Jackson wearing a kilt and beating up skinheads with a golf club canā€™t be all bad. Director Ronny Yu works hard to make one not think about the sorry state of the script but it is nevertheless hard to care much for these thugs. The jokes are loud and not very funny (surprisingly childish, actually), but Robert Carlyle is worth a look as a ruthless soccer fan.Ā

2001-Britain-Canada. 91 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed byĀ Ronny Yu. Cast: Samuel L. Jackson (Elmo McElroy), Robert Carlyle (Felix DeSouza), Emily Mortimer (Dakota Phillips), Rhys Ifans, Meat Loaf, Sean Pertwee.

Trivia: U.S. title: Formula 51.
