Atlantis: The Lost Empire

GO SOMEWHERE REALLY DIFFERENT THIS YEAR…

An expedition guided by the young researcher Milo Thatch discovers the lost continent of Atlantis, but ends up posing a threat to its existence. Disney delivers a anime-inspired film without perky songs and with the funny parts toned down; more effort has been spent on the design of Atlantis and its fantastical aspects. Fans of Joss Whedon will recognize his influence on the script, but the admittedly interesting story may be a bit too advanced for kids ā€“ and not engaging enough for adults. The characters are particularly weak… but all in all, it’s a good enough show.

2001-U.S. Animated. 95 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed byĀ Kirk Wise, Gary Trousdale. Voices of Michael J. Fox (Milo Thatch), James Garner (Lyle Rourke), Cree Summer (Princess Kidagakash), Leonard Nimoy, Don Novello, Claudia Christian… Jim Varney.

Trivia: Varney passed away during the making of the film. Marc Okrand, the inventor of the Klingon language, created the Atlantean language for the film. Followed by a direct-to-DVD sequel, Atlantis: Milo’s Return (2003).Ā
