The Avengers

TWO AMAZING SECRET AGENTS. ONE DIABOLICAL MADMAN. CONDITIONS ARE DARK. THE FORECAST IS DEADLY. TEA, ANYONE?

Wealthy scientist Sir August de Wynter (Sean Connery) uses a machine to take control of the weather, but two agents (Ralph Fiennes, Uma Thurman) intend to send a cold front his way (pun intended). The most critically reviled event of 1998 was a movie version of the classic British 1961–1969 TV series. The traditional view of Englishmen and their habits are spoofed, but this adventure also opts for the silly and noisy. OK visual effects, but the story is moronic and the cast disappointing.

1998-U.S. 89 min. Color. Directed by Jeremiah Chechik. Cast: Ralph Fiennes (John Steed), Uma Thurman (Emma Peel), Sean Connery (Sir August de Wynter), Jim Broadbent, Fiona Shaw, Eddie Izzard.

Trivia: Patrick Macnee, who played Steed on the TV show, provides his voice for an unseen character. Mel Gibson and Gwyneth Paltrow were reportedly considered for the leads.

Razzie: Worst Remake or Sequel.
