Final Portrait

THE SEARCH FOR PERFECTION NEVER ENDS.

Paris, 1964; American critic James Lord (Armie Hammer) becomes a model for famous sculptor Alberto Giacometti (Geoffrey Rush) in his studio, but the portrait turns into a challenge for the artist. Stanley Tucci’s first film as a director in a decade, depicting how Giacometti’s self-doubt gives the people in his life a headache, has moments where it feels just aimless and dangerously close to bland. But going along with Giacometti on his conflicted journey near the end of his career, offering wine, women and conversations with Lord, is still kind of a pleasant experience. The film has a sense of humor, a light touch and a solid cast, especially Rush.

2017-Britain-U.S. 90 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed by Stanley Tucci. Cast: Geoffrey Rush (Alberto Giacometti), Armie Hammer (James Lord), Clémence Poésy (Caroline), Tony Shalhoub, James Faulkner, Sylvie Testud.
