The Devil All the Time

SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST BORN TO BE BURIED.

Donald Ray Pollock’s well-received debut novel was probably never going to be easy to adapt, as it shifts perspectives between several characters who initially don’t seem all that related to each other. Playing out over two decades, we meet a young WWII veteran, two false preachers and a couple of serial killers who are also lovers, among others; the evil effects of religion is a key theme. In a good lead performance, Tom Holland holds this somewhat rambling film together. Much of it looks like a traditional Southern tall tale, sweaty and intense, and that goes a long way.
