Flatliners

IT’S BEAUTIFUL. IT’S EROTIC. IT’S TERRIFYING. THEY KNOW. THEY’VE CROSSED THE LINE.

Five medical students begin experimenting with what happens right after you die by flatlining for one minute until the others resuscitate. A thriller with horror elements as each student who participates in the experiments is haunted by something awful from their past that they involuntarily bring back from the other side. No intellectual fireworks here, but Joel Schumacher and the cast still manage to make us care about the characters. A few thrills here and there; the filmmakers effectively use darkness and sharp colors to evoke a dream-like atmosphere.

1990-U.S. 105 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed byĀ Joel Schumacher. Music: James Newton Howard. Cast: Kiefer Sutherland (Nelson Wright), Julia Roberts (Rachel Mannus), Kevin Bacon (David Labraccio), William Baldwin, Oliver Platt, Hope Davis.

Trivia: Co-produced by Michael Douglas. Val Kilmer and Nicole Kidman were allegedly considered for roles. Remade as Flatliners (2017).Ā
