REMEMBER HIGH SCHOOL? IT’S GOTTEN WORSE.
Filmmaker Nanette Burstein followed a group of high school students in Warsaw, Indiana over several months – and kind of proves to us that all those high school movies we’ve seen are not far from the truth. Each one of the students is introduced as a familiar stereotype: a jock who is the great basketball hope of the town; the nerd who dreams of having a girlfriend; the artistic girl who wants to leave town; the popular girl who’s on every conceivable committee, etc. The movie illustrates the eternal discussion among documentary filmmakers on to what extent you can direct real life; this one pushes the limit. Still, it is an engaging experience and we do get close to these kids and their thoughts and experiences.
2008-U.S. 102 min. Color. Written and directed by Nanette Burstein.
