Rasputin

IT TOOK 300 YEARS TO BUILD AN EMPIRE… BUT ONLY ONE MAN TO DESTROY IT.Ā

WvQOArDIn 1905, the presence of a mysterious monk (Alan Rickman) helps the young and gravely ill Tsarevich recover; Grigori Rasputin’s powerful influence becomes a topic of gossip. This portrayal of the famed monk and the last days of Tsar Nicholas II’s reign in Russia has a fascinating story to tell, but the filmmakers don’t really have anything new to add in spite of the fact that we don’t know all that much about Rasputin and how he died. They also paint the Tsar in an entirely positive light, more or less ignoring why there was a revolution. Still, good performances and nice production values.

1996-U.S. Made for TV. 135 min. Color. Directed byĀ Uli Edel. Cast: Alan Rickman (Grigori Rasputin), Greta Scacchi (Alexandra), Ian McKellen (Nicholas II), David Warner, John Wood, James Frain.

Emmys: Outstanding Actor (Rickman), Actress (Scacchi). Golden Globes: Best Motion Picture Made for TV, Actor (Rickman), Supporting Actor (McKellen).
