The General’s Daughter

GO BEHIND THE LIES.

Army investigator Paul Brenner (John Travolta) tries to find out who murdered a general’s daughter and discovers, together with rape counselor Sara Sunhill (Madeleine Stowe), skeletons in the woman’s closet… Since director Simon West previously made Con Air (1997), you might expect nothing here but macho stupidity, but that’s not the whole picture. Macho is right, but this is a fairly inventive and unpredictable thriller that avoids the worst pitfalls. I do realize that the story is farfetched, but the actors are good (including James Cromwell and James Woods in a part that’s rather unusual for him) and you’ll have to admit that it’s ultimately entertaining hokum.

1999-U.S. 125 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Simon West. Novel: Nelson DeMille. Cast: John Travolta (Paul Brenner), Madeleine Stowe (Sara Sunhill), James Cromwell (Joseph Campbell), Timothy Hutton, Leslie Stefanson, Daniel Von Bargen… James Woods, John Frankenheimer.
