POE’S CLASSIC CHILLER OF INHUMAN CRIME, SHRILL SUSPENSE, AND DAZZLING DETECTIVE WORK.Ā
Auguste Dupin (George C. Scott), a retired police detective, is talked into investigating a brutal double homicide that took place in a Paris apartment; he realizes that the killerās identity may be something of a surprise… This is in fact the only faithful movie adaptation ever made of Edgar Allan Poeās tale, which is strange. The filmmakers have done a good job creating a spooky 19th century Paris atmosphere and the tension remains potent, even to those of us who know the secrets of this tale of animal anger well. Scott easily outshines anyone in the cast; the other characters are not as interesting, but it does help to see the movie actually shot in Paris.Ā
