Promised Land

WHAT’S YOUR PRICE?

Two energy company representatives (Matt Damon, Frances McDormand) arrive in a small Pennsylvania town, hoping to convince people to sign mineral rights leases, but they face resistance. Damon reunited with his Good Will Hunting director for a drama that addresses the contentious environmental and financial issues surrounding fracking. Based on a series of articles in the New York Times, the film has a nice small-town atmosphere and benefits from McDormand’s wry sense of humor, but it feels detached from reality in its final, make-believe moments.

2012-U.S. 107 min. Color. Directed by Gus Van Sant. Screenplay: John Krasinski, Matt Damon. Cast: Matt Damon (Steve Butler), John Krasinski (Dustin Noble), Frances McDormand (Sue Thomason), Rosemarie DeWitt, Scoot McNairy, Titus Welliver… Hal Holbrook.

Trivia: Based on a story by Dave Eggers. Co-produced by Damon and Krasinski; co-executive produced by Van Sant. Damon was originally set to direct.
