Lake Placid

YOU’LL NEVER KNOW WHAT BIT YOU.

Paleontologist Kelly Scott (Bridget Fonda) joins local authorities in Maine to investigate a bloody attack in a lake where a gigantic saltwater crocodile turns out to be responsible. The kind of creature feature that we’re raised to believe is crap, but has its irresistible ingredients. Obviously inspired by Jaws (1975), the film has a silly, unbelievable premise, but the filmmakers must figure that if we’re entertained enough we won’t mind. They’re right. Decent thrills, and gets a shot in the arm from Stan Winston’s effects and Betty White as a lovably bonkers lady who has a secretive bond with the croc.

1999-U.S. 82 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Steve Miner. Screenplay: David E. Kelley. Cast: Bill Pullman (Jack Wells), Bridget Fonda (Kelly Scott), Oliver Platt (Hector Cyr), Brendan Gleeson, Betty White, Meredith Salenger… Mariska Hargitay. Cameo: Adam Arkin.

Trivia: Followed by five TV movies, starting with Lake Placid 2 (2007).
