Evenings for Sale

SHE WANTED LOVE – AND WAS WILLING TO PAY…

After considering suicide, an impoverished nobleman (Herbert Marshall) in Vienna becomes a gigolo; a wealthy American heiress (Mary Boland) falls for him. The same year as Marshall and Charlie Ruggles appeared in Ernst Lubitsch’s classic Trouble in Paradise, they also made this largely forgotten film, whose alternative title might as well have been Austrian Gigolo. Having the count work for his former butler is an amusing touch in a short and pleasant film that provides an unexpectedly likable role for Boland as the uncomplicated woman who happens to have come into money.

1932-U.S. 61 min. B/W. Directed by Stuart Walker. Cast: Herbert Marshall (Franz von Degenthal), Sari Maritza (Lela Fischer), Charlie Ruggles (Bimpfl), Mary Boland, George Barbier, Bert Roach.
