The Young Girls of Rochefort

… THEY’RE SINGING AND DANCING IN THE STREETS.

The Garnier twin sisters (Catherine Deneuve, Françoise Dorléac) dream of a life away from sleepy Rochefort and see their chance in the shape of a fair and two dancing carnival guys (George Chakiris, Grover Dale). After the success of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964), director Jacques Demy delivered this splashy tribute to Hollywood musicals, luring Gene Kelly and West Side Story star Chakiris along for the ride. Still, undeniably French in style, with sunny views from Rochefort and a Michel Legrand score that form an attractive whole but lacks individual stand-out songs; the excessive running time helps create a monotony.

1967-France. 124 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed by Jacques Demy. Cinematography: Ghislain Cloquet. Songs: Michel Legrand, Jacques Demy. Cast: Catherine Deneuve (Delphine Garnier), Françoise Dorléac (Solange Garnier), Gene Kelly (Andy Miller), George Chakiris, Danielle Darrieux, Grover Dale… Michel Piccoli.

Trivia: Original title: Les demoiselles de Rochefort. Agnès Varda reportedly has a cameo in the film as a nun. Later a stage musical.
