The Unforgivable

NO ONE WALKS FREE OF THEIR PAST.

After spending 20 years in prison for shooting a sheriff, Ruth Slater (Sandra Bullock) is released and starts looking for her younger sister. The film version of a British miniseries, Unforgiven (2009), is the directorā€™s English-language debut and a worthy challenge for the star whoā€™s fine as the tormented ex-con. The premise shows promise, but is largely treated as a dour drama that rarely comes alive, not even when it tries to introduce tension in the shape of two vindictive brothers. Gray Seattle (actually, itā€™s Vancouver) locations donā€™t help.

2021-U.S.-Germany. 114 min. Color. Directed byĀ Nora Fingscheidt. Cast: Sandra Bullock (Ruth Slater), Viola Davis (Liz Ingram), Vincent Dā€™Onofrio (John Ingram), Jon Bernthal, Richard Thomas, Linda Emond.

Trivia: Co-produced by Bullock. At one point, Christopher McQuarrie was going to direct, with Angelina Jolie in the lead.Ā
