When famous standup comedian Henry McHenry (Adam Driver) and star soprano Ann Defrasnoux (Marion Cotillard) have a daughter, Annette, the marriage begins to crack… The director’s first film in a decade is a musical in close collaboration with the pop and rock duo Sparks, consisting of the Mael brothers, resulting in an absurd tragedy where most of the dialogue is sung. Some in the audience will be reminded of Jacques Demy, others will be bored to tears. Monotonous and very long, but saved by freaky ideas (including a wooden puppet standing in for Annette), Driver’s intense performance and a psychologically interesting story.
