Rules Don’t Apply

Los Angeles, 1958; Frank (Alden Ehrenreich), who works as a driver for Howard Hughes (Warren Beatty), meets Marla (Lily Collins), a beauty queen who’s signed a contract with Hughes’s studio RKO. Beatty’s first film as director in 18 years, his first as actor in 15 years, is a dream project that he first thought of in the 1970s. Handsome and elaborate, the film still falls in the shadow of The Aviator (2004) because of a dull romance and leading characters. Beatty tries hard, but it’s far from enough.

2016-U.S. 127 min. Color. Written and directed by Warren Beatty. Cast: Warren Beatty (Howard Hughes), Lily Collins (Marla Mabrey), Alden Ehrenreich (Frank Forbes), Annette Bening, Matthew Broderick, Alec Baldwin… Haley Bennett, Candice Bergen, Dabney Coleman, Steve Coogan, Ed Harris, Amy Madigan, Oliver Platt, Martin Sheen, Paul Sorvino.

Trivia: Co-produced by Beatty and Brett Ratner. Andrew Garfield was reportedly considered for a role.
