The United Way

A must for Manchester United fans, this documentary takes us through the clubā€™s darkest days (such as the 1958 crash that killed eight players) through its moments of glory (including winning the European Cup in 1968), guided by the most charismatic player it ever had, Eric Cantona. Many others, like David Beckham and current manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, are interviewed, but it is Cantona, clearly relishing the spotlight, who becomes an arresting presence in the film. Very slickly made, with lots of interesting archive footage, but thereā€™s an obvious downside ā€“ a bit of irreverence, and a critical attitude toward such a financially successful institution, wouldnā€™t have hurt.

2021-Britain. 90 min. Color-B/W. Directed byĀ Mat Hodgson. Screenplay: Eric Cantona, Mat Hodgson, Patrick Nathanson.
