The Unholy

BE CAREFUL WHO YOU PRAY TO.

Journalist Gerry Fenn (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) goes to a small Massachusetts town on an assignment, but becomes a witness to mysterious events surrounding a deaf-mute girl (Cricket Brown). Behind this story lies a worthy message about the danger of believing in false profets; in the novel, author James Herbert explored his Catholic background. But in first-time director Evan Spiliotopoulos’s hands, it becomes a by-the-numbers horror movie, with ineptly staged scares and shoddy effects.

2021-U.S. 99 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos. Novel: James Herbert (”Shrine”). Cast: Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Gerald ”Gerry” Fenn), Cricket Brown (Alice Pagett), William Sadler (William Hagan), Katie Aselton, Cary Elwes, Diogo Morgado.

Trivia: Co-produced by Sam Raimi. Jordana Brewster was reportedly considered for a role.
