The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

In 1981, the Warrens (Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson) try to help a young man (Ruairi O’Connor) who’s been charged with murder; they know that he’s possessed by a demon. The third chapter in this series is no better than all the spin-offs the first movie inspired. A few scares here and there, with a very intense opening exorcism sequence, but the story (inspired by an actual case) disappoints whenever it delves deeper into its occultist theme. O’Connor’s character is largely forgotten in the second half, but the two leads are still engaging.

2021-U.S. 112 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Michael Chaves. Cast: Vera Farmiga (Lorraine Warren), Patrick Wilson (Ed Warren), Ruairi O’Connor (Arne Johnson), Sarah Catherine Hook, John Noble, Julian Hilliard.

Trivia: Co-produced by James Wan, who also worked on the story.
