Children of the Enemy

The al-Hol refugee camp in northeastern Syria harbors thousands of children whose parents once were members of ISIS. Some of those men and women were killed in battle, so bringing the kids home should be a no-brainer. Yet it remains a politically sensitive issue, one Swedish national Patricio Galvez struggled with after the death of his daughter in 2018; she had joined ISIS together with her husband, taking their children to Syria. In this documentary, we follow Galvezā€™s quest to bring all seven kids home; his month-long stay in Iraq and Syria offers many psychological hurdles. An engaging portrait of the man, even if all the time where heā€™s just waiting for answers from authorities is far from riveting.

2021-Sweden-Denmark. 96 min. Color. Written, directed and photographed byĀ Gorki Glaser-MĆ¼ller.
