The Little Things

SOME THINGS NEVER LET US GO.

In 1990, Bakersfield deputy sheriff Joe Deacon (Denzel Washington) is sent to Los Angeles where he gets involved in a murder investigation where he sees connections to an old case he never solved. A serial killer thriller that John Lee Hancock pondered over several decades, but results are disappointing. There are vague similarities with Se7en (1995), and Jared Leto is terrific as the playful murder suspect, but the film is much too leisurely paced, the ending far from satisfying and Washington’s tortured character feels too generic.

2021-U.S. 128 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed by John Lee Hancock. Music: Thomas Newman. Cast: Denzel Washington (Joe Deacon), Rami Malek (Jim Baxter), Jared Leto (Albert Sparma), Chris Bauer, Michael Hyatt, Terry Kinney.

Trivia: Over the years, Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood and Danny DeVito reportedly considered directing the film.
