Moulin Rouge!

NO LAWS. NO LIMITS. ONE RULE. NEVER FALL IN LOVE.

Paris, 1900; budding writer Christian (Ewan McGregor) arrives in Montmartre and meets colorful performers, falling head over heels for Satine (Nicole Kidman), cabaret star and courtesan. The last part of an informal trilogy that includes Strictly Ballroom and Romeo + Juliet was a tremendous box-office hit, a jukebox musical that throws in every imaginable pop hit to make you forget how empty it is. Very playful, with eye-popping technical ingredients, it is when the film asks of us to care about its characters that everything falls apart.

2001-U.S.-Australia. 128 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Baz Luhrmann. Screenplay: Baz Luhrmann, Guy Pearce. Cinematography: Donald McAlpine. Song: ”Come What May” (David Baerwald).
