The 12th Man

BASED ON A TRUE STORY OF SURVIVAL AND HOPE.

When 12 Norwegian resistance fighters, trained in Scotland, reach Norway in 1943 on a sabotage mission, the Germans capture all of them… except Jan Baalsrud (Thomas Gullestad) who tries to reach the Swedish border. Harald Zwart’s most ambitious film to date is a portrait of Norwegian resistance and heroism during the war, based on real events, where we follow the 12th man as he fights his way through the snow, helped by villagers who risk their lives. Rich moments of tension bookend a remarkable story that drags at times. Jonathan Rhys Meyers fits in nicely as a zealous Nazi.

2017-Norway. 135 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Harald Zwart. Screenplay: Petter Skavlan. Cast: Thomas Gullestad (Jan Baalsrud), Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Kurt Stage), Marie Blokhus (Gudrun Grønnvoll), Mads Sjøgård Pettersen, Kim Jøran Olsen, Julia Bache-Wiig.

Trivia: Original title: Den 12. mann. The story was also told in the Norwegian film Nine Lives (1957).
