Raya and the Last Dragon

500 years after monsters called the Druun were contained thanks to an alliance between humans and dragons, they are once again released and it’s up to a young princess, Raya, to defeat them. As part of renewed efforts to be more inclusive and sensitive as to how cultures are depicted, Disney came up with one of their most ambitious efforts, a handsomely produced adventure set somewhere in Southeast Asia, infusing the film with the food, culture and customs of those countries. A feast for the eyes, even if the formula is familiar, with many amusing supporting characters, including a villainous baby.

2021-U.S. Animated. 114 min. Color. Widescreen. Produced by Peter Del Vecho, Osnat Shurer. Directed by Don Hall, Carlos López Estrada. Screenplay: Qui Nguyen, Adele Lim. Music: James Newton Howard. Voices of Kelly Marie Tran (Raya), Awkwafina (Sisu), Gemma Chan (Namaari), Daniel Dae Kim, Sandra Oh, Benedict Wong.

Last word: “It wasn’t until Kelly-Marie Tran came in into the recording studio that gave Raya a soul and made her come to life. Because there’s so much that is inspired by the culture, and there’s so much that the team really steeped itself in, but there are also things that are in our DNA that is not something you’ve learned from a book or watching a performance, it’s like a sensibility. Instincts and things you don’t even know – the storyboard artists from Thailand [can] put it into a board or you write it in a script or you see it on the screen, [it’s] Kelly-Marie’s interpretation of the character where you really feel it.” (Lim, Slash Film)
