Ammonite

In the 1830s, Mary Anning (Kate Winslet), whose standing as a prominent paleontologist is rarely acknowledged by male colleagues, begins a love affair with the depressed wife (Saoirse Ronan) of a geologist. As in his far superior Godā€™s Own Country (2017), Francis Lee offers a gay romance in tortured environs, this time between historical figures who, in Leeā€™s imagination, were more than friends. Winslet is great as a woman whoā€™s built a mental fortress around her, and the film looks meticulously conceivedā€¦ but itā€™s also dramatically inert.
