In 1978, three women (Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, Elisabeth Moss) find their mobster husbands thrown in prison; when the local mob boss refuses to help them out financially, the women start their own little operation. Andrea Berloff’s directing debut uses its locations and period flavors well. The soundtrack hits all the right notes and the three leads are colorful; McCarthy and Haddish’s sense of humor serves the film well. However, the shifts in tone are brutal enough to make you seasick and its feminist message is a bit on the nose.
