This documentary is hardly for newcomers to the cinema of Andrei Tarkovsky. His son takes us through the famous director’s films aided by clips, some newly shot material of the places where Tarkovsky lived, old photos and audio recordings where the filmmaker offers his thoughts on art, the meaning of his mysterious films and spiritualism. A straight-forward documentary would have taught us more about the man, his movies and what it was like working in the Soviet Union, but I realize I’m being a bit of a bore. His son has achieved something more personal here; there’s even poetry by Tarkovsky’s father Arseny on display.
2020-Italy-Russia-Sweden. 97 min. Color-B/W. Written and directed by Andrey A. Tarkovsky.
