On the Rocks

When Laura (Rashida Jones) becomes suspicious of her husband’s (Marlon Wayans) relationship with a co-worker, her playboy dad (Bill Murray) takes charge of the ”investigation”. Sofia Coppola and Murray really are a perfect fit, reuniting in grand style after Lost in Translation (2003). This slight but very enjoyable comedy is just the right vehicle for the actor as a wealthy, old-fashioned but lonely art dealer who finds his daughter’s concerns about her husband the right excuse to have an adventure together with her. Jones is also good as a ”straight man” to her dad’s shenanigans and Coppola fills the movie with a lovable New York flavor; this surely is a personal project for her.”

2020-U.S. 96 min. Color. Produced by Sofia Coppola, Youree Henley. Written and directed by Sofia Coppola. Cast: Rashida Jones (Laura), Bill Murray (Felix), Marlon Wayans (Dean), Jessica Henwick, Jenny Slate, Barbara Bain.

Trivia: Co-produced by Coppola.

Last word: “It started from being at a moment in my life of having little kids and still trying to be creative during that transition. I also had a friend who told me a story about hiding in the bushes to spy on her New York playboy father. That was the initial spark for an espionage adventure inspired by movies like ‘The Thin Man’, which I love. I wanted to do a buddy story about a father-daughter relationship that explored that generational divide because I haven’t seen that story.” (Coppola, Vogue)
