The Song of Names

THEY BEGAN AS RIVALS, THEN BECAME BROTHERS. ONE OF THEM DISAPPEARS. AN OBSESSIVE SEARCH OVER TWO CONTINENTS AND A HALF CENTURY BEGINS.

When a young violinist shows up in his life, Martin Simmonds (Tim Roth) realizes that his style could only have been taught by a man who became an unforgettable part of his life and then vanished 34 years ago… A somber, adult drama that in the hands of The Red Violin (1998) director François Girard capably moves between three time periods, beginning with two boys getting to know each other before World War II, and then reconnecting decades later. It’s a story about coming to terms with your identity… but slow and unable to catch fire.

2019-Canada-Hungary-Germany-Britain. 113 min. Color. Directed by François Girard. Novel: Norman Lebrecht. Cast: Tim Roth (Martin Simmonds), Clive Owen (Dovidl Rapoport), Catherine McCormack (Helen Simmonds), Gerran Howell, Jonah Hauer-King, Misha Handley… Saul Rubinek, Eddie Izzard.
