What Maisie Knew

HOLD ON WITH ALL YOUR HEART.

Six-year-old Maisie (Onata Aprile) is caught in the middle when her affluent parents, a rock artist (Julianne Moore) and an art dealer (Steve Coogan), decide to split. The filmmakers did a clever thing, adapting Henry Jamesā€™s 19th-century novel for a modern New York setting; not for a second does it feel dated. Moore and Coogan are worth a look as Maisieā€™s chronically narcissistic parents. Our sympathies obviously lie with Maisie herself (Aprile is terrific) and the two twentysomethings who reluctantly become her guardians. Well made, even if everything is obvious from the beginning.Ā

2013-U.S. 98 min. Color. Directed byĀ Scott McGehee, David Siegel. Novel: Henry James. Cast: Julianne Moore (Susanna), Alexander SkarsgĆ„rd (Lincoln), Steve Coogan (Beale), Onata Aprile (Maisie), Joanna Vanderham.

Trivia: Evan Rachel Wood was reportedly first cast in Vanderhamā€™s role. The novel was filmed as a British miniseries in 1968.Ā
