AN EXTRAORDINARY LIFE. BY DESIGN.
Fashion designer Ralph Lauren certainly has a career worth talking about, and that goes a long way in this documentary. It’s as stylish and tasteful as Lauren’s work, bringing us close to him and his family while also treating us to the story of how he started building his empire by selling ties that went against what was considered right for men at the time. We learn how he found his style and stuck to it over the years, idolizing the American dream and old Hollywood movies, viewing himself as a Steve McQueen for the fashion world. The portrait is however marred by the filmmakers’ refusal to depict Lauren as a human being rather than a saint.
