In the Tall Grass

On their way to San Diego, a brother and a sister (Avery Whitted, Laysla De Oliveira) stop by a field of tall grass where they hear a boy calling out for help; after stepping into the field, they realize they’re trapped. This adaptation of a novella that King and his son wrote together has an effective, claustrophobic idea at its core. Even a vast field can feel like a room from where there is no escape. Interesting and intriguing at first, but as the forces of the field have an effect on its victims the movie derails, resulting in a chaotic final half hour.

2019-Canada. 101 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed by Vincenzo Natali. Novella: Stephen King, Joe Hill. Cast: Harrison Gilbertson (Travis McKean), Laysla De Oliveira (Becky DeMuth), Avery Whitted (Cal DeMuth), Patrick Wilson, Rachel Wilson, Will Buie, Jr.

Trivia: First shown at Fantastic Fest, then released to Netflix. James Marsden was reportedly first considered for Patrick Wilson’s role.
