The Black Hole

YOU CAN’T ESCAPE THE MOST POWERFUL FORCE IN THE UNIVERSE.

On their way back to Earth, the spacecraft USS Palomino discovers a huge black hole and another spaceship nearby, which turns out to have been missing for years. The success of Star Wars (1977) led Disney to invest in their own space movie, their first for mature audiences. The story has a motley crew, including a talking robot, encountering the mysterious captain of a previous expedition who harbors dark secrets. Cheesy and talky, but interesting effects for its time, and the music score is memorable.

1979-U.S. 98 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed byĀ Gary Nelson. Cinematography: Frank V. Phillips. Music: John Barry. Cast: Maximilian Schell (Hans Reinhardt), Anthony Perkins (Alex Durant), Robert Forster (Dan Holland), Joseph Bottoms, Yvette Mimieux, Ernest Borgnine. Voices of Roddy McDowall, Slim Pickens.
