When a ram that belongs to a sheep farmer, Kiddi (Theódór Júlíusson), is found to have scrapie, all the sheep in the area are destroyed… but Kiddi’s brother (Sigurdur Sigurjónsson) makes a different choice in secret. The director’s international breakthrough originated from a tale his father used to tell about two brothers who didn’t talk to each other for 40 years, even though they lived close. The filmmakers use the visual language of western movies to illustrate the loneliness that’s part of these men’s rural lives – grim landscape, grim old souls. Fine lead performances.
