Budapest, 1913; after being raised in an orphanage, Írisz Leiter (Juli Jakab) is looking for work at the famous hat store her family once owned, but that also raises questions about her past. The director’s second feature film (after the astonishing Son of Saul (2015)) sounds intriguing on paper, as Írisz’s journey turns into a portrait of Austria-Hungary on the verge of collapse. Ambitious in every way, but also slow and this time the director’s claustrophobic focus on the lead serves not nearly as much of a purpose as in Son of Saul.
