Victor Frankenstein

In 19th-century London, medical student Victor Frankenstein (James McAvoy) helps a hunchback (Daniel Radcliffe), who has great knowledge of human anatomy, escape from a circus. We’ve seen the Mary Shelley story on the silver screen many times before, but this one chooses a different perspective – Igor’s. Much more is made of him here and he begins to question Frankenstein’s sanity and lack of ethical limits. Entertaining, but the film has nothing substantial to add to Shelley; Radcliffe is fine, but McAvoy always seems one step from the looney bin.

2015-U.S. 110 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Paul McGuigan. Cast: James McAvoy (Victor Frankenstein), Daniel Radcliffe (Igor Straussman), Jessica Brown Findlay (Lorelei), Andrew Scott, Charles Dance, Freddie Fox.
