Agnes (Kelly Macdonald), a suburban wife and mother, discovers a talent for thousand-piece jigsaw puzzles and meets a former champion (Irrfan Khan) who’s looking for a new partner ahead of a national contest. This romantic drama, a remake of a 2009 Argentine film, may look like it’s going to follow a very predictable formula, but it’s done with a gentle hand and has richly drawn, believable characters. Piece by piece, the portrait of Agnes and her journey to a more fulfilling life touches in a low-key way, boosted by an excellent performance by Macdonald. Khan is terrific as her millionaire partner.
